We’ve deconstructed all our icons. We know politicians are lying assholes, we know soap stars are coke freaks, handsome actors are tranny weirdos and gorgeous supermodels are bulimic, neurotic wretches. We know our favorite comedians will turn out to be alcoholic perverts or suicidal depressives. Our reality shows have held up a scalding mirror to our yapping baboon faces and cheesy, obvious obsessions, our trashy, gossipy love of trivia and dirt.

We know we’ve fucked up the atmosphere and doomed the lovely polar bears and we can’t even summon up the energy to feel guilty anymore. Let the pedophiles have the kids. There’s nowhere left to turn and no one left to blame except, paradoxically, those slightly medieval guys without the industrial base. What’s left to believe in? The only truly moral, truly goodhearted man left is a made-up comic book character! The only secular role models for a progressive, responsible, scientific-rational Enlightenment culture are… Kal-El of Krypton, aka Superman and his multicolored descendants!

So we chose not to deconstruct the superhero but to take him at face value, as a fiction that was trying to tell us something wonderful about ourselves. Somewhere, in our darkest night, we made up the story of a man who will never let us down.

What would be going on at DC if I were in charge (lol):

    trevoredwards:

    • Judd Winick would be the only person allowed to write Jason Todd.
    • Scott Snyder would be kept on Batman indefinitely.
    • Brad Meltzer would be allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants.
    • Scott Lobdell would be shot in the face.
    • Greg Tocchini, Robert Teranishi, and Jock would be drawing most of the bat-titles.
    • Adam Hughes would get to draw whatever the fuck he wants.
    • Grant Morrison would be allowed to write any male character of his choosing (I’d keep him away from female characters though, since he’s always botching shit).
    • Geoff Johns would probably be put back on Flash forever.
    • Jeph Loeb would get another Superman/Batman title and whatever else he wanted to write.
    • Jim Lee would get smacked and I’d let him know that, as pretty as his art is, he isn’t the greatest artist in the world. I’d probably put him on an Aquaman title or something.
    • Marv Wolfman would be brought in to try and fix the disastrous Teen Titans title.

So many other things, but I don’t have the time to sit here and write a novel about what’s wrong with DC (just kidding, I do have the time, I’m just not going to do it).

I was just trying to figure out who I’d put on Nightwing and then I remembered this list, and I never even included Nightwing! I’d probably have Snyder, Dixon, and Jones collab on writing duties and Jock and Teranishi on the art.

    Day Ten: Favourite Batman writer?

People Aren’t going to like me for this.. but It’s going to be Judd Winick…

The Guy brought my favourite character back from the dead and into comics full force, no matter what-other criticism may be held against him, he has my respect for that. And his run on Batwing isn’t half bad…

Yeah, people bash on this guy a lot for some reason, but I’ve enjoyed the majority of what I’ve read by him. He definitely treated Jason Todd with a lot more care and respect than any writer who’s touched him since.

    And Batwing is just fantastic!
