I had no feeling of identity with the United States, and yet I resented the ignorant and snobbish criticism of Americans that was current at that time…most of them seemed to have a lot of bounce and liveliness and to be thoroughly enjoying themselves where the average Englishman of the same class would be stuffy or completely bored.
