What do Rey S*lo theorists think Luke’s role in this new trilogy will be? Not to sort out his sister’s problems with her kids, I hope.

The mentor role, similar to Obi-Wan in the original trilogy. I don’t think he’s going to end up sacrificing himself like Obi-Wan, but we’ll see. If he does end up dying, I think it’s likely it will be in a way that will facilitate Kylo’s return to the light side. 

But Han Solo fulfilled Obi-Wan’s role in The Force Awakens. It would make more sense if Luke were to fill Yoda’s shoes as he was presented in The Empire Strikes Back, if any mentor role at all. Even then, I don’t know why we would want even more similarity to the OT and not something new or a different spin on it at least. You know? Plus, I can’t fathom Luke just being a mentor and that’s it. TFA was about finding him, after all, so it sounds anti-climactic to not only do that but also have him die for Kylo’s sake, if anyone’s.

Something I think is important to remember, and you touched on this, is that this isn’t the original trilogy. They pulled A LOT of inspiration (basically everything about the movie) from the original trilogy because they wanted to recapture what made the series so great to begin with, but I don’t think because of that, that Luke is necessarily stuck inhabiting the archetype of either Obi-Wan or Yoda. 

That said, I don’t really know what other role Luke could really fill at this point, in this version, of the series.

I think it goes a little bit deeper than him just being a mentor. He’s a catalyst for change. Remember, Snoke says that if Skywalker returns “the new Jedi will rally behind him.” I think that quote is a really important one because it shows that the First Order aren’t necessarily afraid of Luke himself, but the kind of change he could bring if he returned to training Jedi. 

Really, all we can do is continue to speculate. There’s just too much information that we don’t have yet (i.e. the details/circumstance behind Kylo’s fall to the dark side, the details of Luke’s failed Jedi Academy, particularly how long it went on or how many he trained, ect.) to be able to paint an accurate picture of WHO Luke Skywalker is at this point in his life. Obviously, it was a very deliberate decision to make the movie so opened ended. That way fans would be stuck having the same conversation that we’re having for several years.
