LET’S TALK ABOUT HOW ALL OF THIS COMPLETELY GUTS TIM’S CHARACTER AS WE KNEW IT SHALL WE
- HIS PARENTS
The severe emotional neglect dominating Tim’s childhood very much informed who he was and how he related to people. That’s why Dick, why that simple moment of sincere, easy affection and the horrific loss that followed, had such a profound effect on him, and why Batman and Robin became so important to him.
- ROBIN
Robin’s legacy meant everything to Tim. He knew that Robin was a symbol – of life, and hope, and joy – and one that couldn’t be allowed to die with Jason. He put everything he had into doing that name justice, into being worthy of it, of both Dick and Jay. It was both an inspiring, driving force and an incredibly heavy burden.
- BATMAN
Tim figuring out Bruce and Dick’s identities at such a young age established a lot about him – how keenly perceptive, shrewd, and, frankly, obsessive, he already was. He kept that secret for years, with no prompting or encouragement.
- OLYMPICS?
Tim was always more of a detective than a fighter. It didn’t come easily to him; he wasn’t trained from childhood the way Dick was, he didn’t have to defend himself the way Jason did. But he worked his ass off. He compensated. It makes him imperfect and admirable all at once.
I just don’t understand why you’d just throw all of this out.
The great thing about comic books as a medium is the fact that when you come into any one character (ninety percent of the time), said character has a rich and meaningful background thanks to all of the previous writer/artist teams that have come before. Which gives you a lot to work with (challenges based on things the character has struggled with in the past, perhaps rocky relationships that previous writers have only touched on, ect). I don’t understand why DC has forfeit such a fantastic universe rich in history for a fresh slate. In my opinion, it’s an extremely lazy move and just shows that a lot of the people DC has working for them don’t have the creativity or integrity to be working in this medium. /rant

Jason came back from the dead and became an anti-hero that wanted to protect innocents, respected and held women to high regards and if DC would let him grow as a character, could move on from his past. Roy Harper moved past his addiction, became a top member of two super hero groups and became a wonderful, loving father. Kory escaped from her enslavers, came to Earth, became a supermodel and a superhero and has since then mentored several young heroes and become a powerful role model.
So far your reincarnations of these characters have done nothing so great, and will continue not to as long as you continue to turn a blind eye to the fact that you are writing these characters in a hurtful manner to the readers and the fans of these characters and continue writing them in such a manner. STOP ACTING LIKE A VICTIM. Grow up and learn to take criticism. And consider that you are wrong for once in your life. Like I said, if everyone says you’re dead, it’s time to lie down, Lobdell.

The fact that he separates himself from ‘esteemed’ writers just tells you that even he knows how shitty he is.

In defense of Scott Lobdell
So, there’s a lot of hate going to Lobdell, which is very understandable. He’s a plague on a lot of things he touches. However, I would like to respond by pointing out some good he’s done for the world of comics.
-He’s the guy who finally acknowledged Northstar as gay. That big gay wedding could not have happened without him. While Jim Shooter was editor at Marvel, he kept a “No openly gay character” rule. Shooter’s run (From 78-87) had many positives; books were on schedule, new writers developed, and many books had their best runs (Including Frank Miller’s time on Daredevil, one of my favorite Marvel characters). However, sensitivity was not one of Shooter’s hallmarks. In 1992, Lobdell finally was allowed to have Northstar announce his sexuality, in an attempt to bring light to AIDS. Royalties were donated to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. In addition, he created the first gay character of the new 52, Bunker of the Teen Titans (One of the best reasons to be reading that book). He is the first gay titan since Hero Cruz (Who lasted one issue).
-He spearheaded a period of comics that I adored; the 90s X-Men. With almost 100 issues under his belt, he wrote many of the X stories you and I fell in love with.
Granted, he may now be out of touch. But let’s not forget what Lobdell has done for comics; he was a major part of the X-Men boom of the 90s (X-Cutioner’s Song, Phalanx Covenant, Age of Apocalypse, and Onslaught come to mind immediately), and he helped pave the way for heterosexuality in comics, making the universes a little more diverse.
He did some great stuff for Marvel, but he’s fucked up everything he’s touched over at DC. Which makes me scratch my head. His destruction of Roy and Starfire is something I can’t get over though. He’s pretty much raped both characters, and he’s about to do the same to Tim.
